Evacuation is stressful even when it’s planned. A little preparation turns it from chaos into a checklist. Here’s what to do before, during, and after you leave.
Know before you go
Learn your area’s evacuation routes and zones ahead of time — not during the emergency. Keep a “go bag” ready: water, food, flashlight, first aid, medication, documents, cash, and a change of clothes.
When the order comes
Leave when you’re told to, not when it feels urgent. Fill the car with fuel. Tell someone outside the area where you’re heading. Shut off utilities only if instructed and you know how.
On the road
Follow the official routes — shortcuts may be flooded or blocked. Keep the gas tank above half whenever possible. Never drive through standing water; a car can be swept away in surprisingly shallow water.
When you return
Wait for the all-clear. Watch for downed lines and structural damage. Photograph any damage for insurance before cleaning up.
