TikTok Terminology and Features

“3-TikTok Terminology and Features”.

Welcome to section three! Now that your profile is set up, it’s time to speak the language of the platform. We are diving deep into the key terminology, demystifying the algorithm, and exploring the powerful tools TikTok provides to help you track your journey.

3. TikTok Terminology and Features

Learning Key TikTok Terms: FYP, Duets, Challenges, Trends, Hashtags, and More

To thrive on TikTok, you must understand its unique language and features:

FYP (For You Page): This is the personalized feed of videos that serves as the default homepage for most users. The FYP is curated by a recommendation system designed to keep you on the app longer. Not all content is guaranteed to be recommended to the FYP; content deemed “FYF Ineligible” may be harder to find, even in search results.

Duets and Stitch: These are essential collaboration features.

    ◦ A Duet allows one user to record a video side-by-side with another user’s existing content.

    ◦ A Stitch allows you to clip and integrate moments (responses or remixes) from another TikToker’s content into your own video. Using Duets and Stitch features is a recommended strategy to react, respond, and remix trending content, thereby building engagement.

    ◦ Note: Videos created using the Duet or Stitch features are typically not eligible for monetization through the Creator Rewards Program.

Trends and Challenges: These are core to TikTok culture. A trend often uses a popular sound or hashtag. When you join a trend or challenge, you connect with new audiences under a common theme. Trends move incredibly quickly, so speed is often more important than perfection if your strategy relies on them.

Hashtags: These are vital for connecting with communities and new audiences. The algorithm relies on hashtags as part of video information to categorize and recommend your content. TikTok suggests using around two or three relevant hashtags per video. Although commonly seen, highly generic tags like #fyp or #foryoupage do not do much to boost discovery.

Understanding How TikTok’s Algorithm Works: The Importance of Engagement, Watch Time, and Interaction

The TikTok algorithm is a proprietary ranking system that determines which videos appear on a user’s uniquely personalized For You Page. To work with the algorithm, you must understand the three main factors it prioritizes:

1. User Interactions (Interest Signals): The algorithm studies every action—or inaction—you take, referring to them as “interest signals”.

Engagement Rate: The algorithm rewards high engagement, as each like, comment, and share counts heavily. High engagement tells the algorithm your account is worth showing to others. Replying to comments with another video is an excellent way to boost engagement, as the reply video may also be shown to people who watched the original post.

Viewer Feedback: The algorithm studies which videos users like, comment on, save, share, or skip, as well as accounts they follow, to match interests with relevant content.

2. Watch Time and Video Completion: This is one of the most critical factors for determining a video’s success.

Goal: TikTok considers content valuable if users watch it from start to finish. The percentage of the video watched (the finish rate) and the total watch time are tracked to calculate monetization rewards.

The Hook: Because TikTok moves fast, the first three seconds are critical. Starting videos with a strong hook—such as a question, a bold statement, or a preview of the end result—is crucial to inspire viewers to stop scrolling and remain engaged. Using text overlay (a “visual hook”) at the start is also effective, as many users scroll mindlessly or watch with the sound off.

Video Length: To be eligible for the high payouts of the Creator Rewards Program, videos must be at least one minute long.

3. Video Information and Search Value (SEO): TikTok uses the information you provide about the video to categorize and distribute it.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO): TikTok is increasingly used as a search engine, particularly by Gen Z. Optimizing your content for specific search terms (TikTok SEO) is essential for discoverability and longevity.

Keyword Placement: Include relevant keywords and phrases in your video’s captions, text overlays, and voiceover so the algorithm knows exactly what your content is about. You can search the platform to see what topics and phrases people are currently looking for.

Trending Elements: Using trending sounds, music, and hashtags can help make your videos more discoverable.

Navigating the TikTok Creator Tools

TikTok provides several built-in features and dashboards designed to help creators and businesses analyze performance and monetize content.

TikTok Studio/Creator Tools: This is the primary hub for managing your growth. You access it from your profile menu (the three horizontal lines).

Analytics Dashboard: This tool provides valuable insights into your video performance and audience behavior. Metrics available include views, likes, comments, shares, average engagement rate, follower growth, and the best time to post. You can analyze data to refine your strategy, see what content resonates most, and double down on success.

Creator Search Insights Tool: This is encouraged by TikTok to help creators check popular search terms and trends, ensuring their content topics are popular and in high demand.

Monetization Tools: TikTok Studio provides access to monetization programs and related features:

    ◦ Creator Rewards Program: The current program for earning money directly from original videos one minute or longer.

    ◦ TikTok Series: Allows creators to place up to 80 videos behind a paywall, accessible only to paying users.

    ◦ LIVE Gifts and Subscriptions: Tools to earn money during live streams through virtual gifts purchased by followers.

    ◦ TikTok Shop Affiliate Center: A dashboard that allows affiliates to browse products, view commission rates, and manage promotional links for products listed on TikTok Shop.

Content Creation Tools: The app itself offers various features for editing, including filters, the Green Screen effect, and the ability to add text overlays and auto-captions. For more advanced editing, third-party apps like CapCut are highly recommended.
