Once the basic account is created, you face a key choice:

Personal accounts allow you to use commercial and trending sounds in your videos, which is essential for maximizing visibility on the For You Page (FYP).

Business Account: This account is ideal if you primarily want to sell directly, market your own brand, or place ads. Business accounts provide tools like detailed analytics, the ability to sell products through a TikTok Shop, and an email button. However, Business Accounts only have access to the Commercial Music Library.

To switch to a Business Account (it’s free): Navigate to your Profile, tap the menu icon (three horizontal lines), select Settings and privacy, then Account, and finally Switch to Business Account. You will need to select the category that best describes your brand or venture and add your business email address.

Why Niching Matters:

When you select a focused topic, the TikTok algorithm is able to categorize your account. This enables TikTok to show your videos to people who are genuinely interested in that specific topic, which in turn leads to higher watch time and views. If the algorithm cannot determine what your content is about, your reach will be limited, often leading to the frustration known as “200 view jail”.

How to Define Your Niche:

1. Experience and Passion: Choose a subject where you have personal experience, are knowledgeable, and are excited to create content about.

2. Eternal Markets: Consider the four “Eternal Markets” that consistently draw public interest: Health, Wealth, Relationships, and Happiness.

3. Start Broadly (If Unsure): If you are a beginner, you don’t need a niche immediately. You can start by experimenting with various video styles, like vlogs, tips, or entertainment. Then, you can develop your niche based on which content you enjoy making and which videos are received best by your audience.

4. Content Pillars: Once you have a general niche (e.g., Fitness), define three to five recurring content themes or pillars within that niche. Rotating between these specific topics helps diversify your content mix.

How to set up a TikTok profile for maximum engagement (bio, profile picture, and contact info)

Your TikTok profile serves as your digital storefront. After an engaging video appears on the FYP, users visit your profile to decide whether to follow you.

1. Username and Account Name (SEO)

• Username (@handle): This should be recognizable. If you are building a personal brand, it is recommended to use your name and keep the handle consistent across all your social platforms.

• Account Name (Display Name): This is your most important SEO opportunity on your profile. You should format it to include your name followed by a relevant keyword describing what you do (e.g., “First Name | Fat Loss Coach”). This optimization allows people who search for that keyword on TikTok to find your profile under the ‘users’ tab.

2. The Bio (Biography)

Your bio space is limited, so it must be clear. Do not focus on your accomplishments or credentials. Instead, focus on the viewer.

• The Help Statement: Write a clear statement that immediately tells the viewer what value you offer and why they should follow you. A good format is: “I help [type of person] achieve [objective/result]”.

• Clarity and CTA: Avoid vague or “fluffy” words. Always include a clear Call to Action (CTA), such as “DM now” or directing them to your link.

The clickable link in your bio is essential for directing traffic off-platform and driving sales.

Link Eligibility: Business accounts can add a website URL immediately. However, personal accounts typically need to reach 1,000 followers to unlock the ability to add a clickable link.

Link-in-Bio Tools: Because TikTok only allows one link in the bio, you should use a link-in-bio tool (such as Linktree, Linkpop, or Hootsuite’s link in bio page). This centralized page can host multiple external destinations, like your e-commerce store, affiliate links, or other social media channels.

Alternative CTA (Below 1,000 Followers): If you haven’t yet reached 1,000 followers, you can still direct users off-platform by asking them to “DM [another platform, e.g., Instagram] for more info” or to click the linked social icon.
